WORKSHOPS

Bini Atkinson

Artist in Residence – Lawrence Batley Theatre / NHS Kirklees.   H

I work with stitched, adapted, altered papers and materials.  I create what can be broadly termed as craft textiles, using found and recycled materials. By layering, waxing, scratching, painting, cutting, tearing, sanding, printing and hand or machine stitching I produce surfaces and starting points from which I develop a final piece of work.

My recent work has been based on the physical changes and healing after surgery. I underwent two operations during the last year and I found the therapeutic nature of depicting the process of healing helped and supported pain control and my general well being. Having always been very squeamish, I found that documenting the physical changes helped me view my body with pride and now I can’t stop telling everyone how wonderful the experience has been and how it has had a most positive affect.

Having been given the opportunity to work within the creative environment of the Lawrence Batley Theatre, I have chosen to respond to the Theatre, its audience and client base. I have worked on the concept of “foot printing” performances. I experimented by identifying the way an audience interacts with each other and explored ways in which to record this. The work is often stitched based but includes elements of print, surface pattern and book making.

As part of the residency I led workshops for adults and children.

I will shortly be starting a residency with the NHS, Kirklees and producing site specific work for their new headquarters.
